Recycling Sorter Replacement

Project Type: Industrial

Scope of Work: Recycling System Upgrade

This project consisted of the design and construction of a new Recycling Sorter to be furnished and installed to replace the existing recycling sorter in the Recycling Center, Building 1980 at Fort Riley, KS. The objective was that it would be used to correct deficiencies under the Army’s Sustainment, Restoration, and Modernization (SRM) Program to help ensure better quality of the facility’s maintenance and repair cycles. The recycling sorter is used to sort mixed recyclable materials along a conveyor on an elevated platform and was built to be able to maintain and process a single stream of materials up to 10 tons per hour. The existing Excel 2R9 baler was integrated into the new replacement sorter. Also, reinstalled from the previous sorter were the Recycletech EPS Styrofoam recycling machine, Salter Brecknell floor scale, and the Rice Lake weight indicator. The new machinery increases the building’s efficiency by helping to minimize the materials that need to be handled manually by the recycling staff. The recycling sorter can automatically sort all types of materials to include cardboard, paper, plastics, metals, and glass. There are designated chutes for each material type to be organized and then easily transferred to the Baler. All electrical, fire protection, and gas infrastructures were also relocated.
